Phillip Rose

Co-Founder & Head Brewer

Phillip Rose, Co-Founder and Head Brewer, has been in the beverage industry for more than 15 years. His passion for craft beer grew quickly when he and his wife traveled the country seeking out breweries, brew pubs, and local distribution beer at craft beer bottle shops. Phillip would collect growlers from all over the country and his friends would bring them back from their travels too, creating quite a large growler collection. Phillip began homebrewing in Lubbock, Texas in 2009 and was the winner of the prestigious Best in Show award at the Bluebonnet Brew Off in Dallas in 2010. Phillip taught homebrew classes in Lubbock. He studied with other local homebrewers and craft beer enthusiasts until he left Lubbock in 2011. He continued to brew in the Dallas area and was able to break into the craft beer industry in 2015 as a regional sales team member for a large craft brewery. Phillip has a history as a bar manager, sales and distribution of beverages throughout West Texas and North Dallas. Phillip has continued to travel and sought out specialty beers. He connects with as many others as he can who have a passion for craft beer – drinking and brewing. Phillip makes distinct specialty craft brews. Phillip has been married to his wife since 2006 and they have 2 young daughters.

Dr. Robert Lenington

Co-Founder & CFO

Robert has known Phillip (head brewer) for more than 20 years before either of them really thought about beer – to drink or as a business.  Robert’s journey to a brewery began in college at Texas Tech University. There, he worked in the Biochemistry department as a lab tech for Dr. Guigen Li where he learned sterile techniques.  Robert was running the lab in the biochemistry department by the time he graduated (with Honors). He then attended UT Houston for Medical School, and he completed his Surgical Residency in Orlando, Florida.  Robert remembers the first time that he tasted a craft beer and it changed everything for him.  He was intrigued by the precision of the process that could create vastly different brews with fairly similar base ingredients. Soon after that, Robert began homebrewing and was known to share his homebrews at local events and gatherings.  Robert has been involved in the local community since settling in Sulphur Springs and opening his medical practice. After one local event where Robert shared his homebrew, he was approached about starting a brewery in Sulphur Springs. Robert reached out to Phillip, who he knew to also be involved in homebrewing, and they discussed the great benefits this brewery would have on the local Sulphur Springs community. Robert knows his BackStory with Phillip is just the preface to this partnership and the adventure of BackStory Brewery.
